Catch of the Week Vol. 4: June 1995

Summer 1995 could very well be my (easo91) absolute favorite tour in all of Phish's 35 years of touring. Every night seems to have atleast one stand out moment, the band played with a ferocity that followed into the winter months that surpassed even '94s intensity. It was the final year of face-melting phish, the culmination of their entire first 12 years before transitioning into the also spectacular cow funk. (96 was an odd transition year). I might have a personal bias though, since 95 tapes were the first I came across in my early listening and I came to know them well.

An obscene number of jams pushed beyond the 20 minute mark in June of '95, Bowie and Mike's had multiple excellent renditions through the tour, Saratoga broke free into an entirely new monster, Tweezer took up nearly the entirety of a set twice this summer. Something was in the water, and it comes through in the playing. Shows on a whole are far easier to listen through start to finish, the playing was frantic, but also precise, I don't think Trey played a wrong note between 1991 and 1997.

Picking just four (this case pushing five) hours for tonight was difficult, practically impossible. Too much will be left unplayed, but I guess that just means we'll have to revisit summer '95 again (God forbid, without going through the Summer of '89). What's here tonight is 4 hours of massive summer jams steeped in frantic psychedelia. A 30 minute Runaway Jim, a grimey Mike's, a truly explorative Bowie, enjoy!

Catch of the Week Vol. 1 Recap

Every Monday on WFAM features a new broadcast of Catch of the Week; the one time we take away from broadcasting full shows to get right to the point, cut out all the filler and enjoy 4 hours of prime phish cuts. The inaugural Vol. 1 was a bit scattered in it's organization, but that's the nature of pilots.

Vol. 4 is scheduled for 7:30 pm EST on Monday 6/25. In the mean time, here's a break down of Vol. 1 and a linked to all the archived broadcasts in glorious FLAC.

Avoid the Chaos of Summer Couch Tour Chat

Last year when we were barely a blip on Mixlr, we were still regularly getting 100+ listeners in the chat during 2017 recaps, and while we're thrilled that we've grown over the last year, chats can get almost impossible to follow when there are that many people in one single chat stream. (Recent JRAD and Dead and Co. streams have more than one post per second). In the run up to tour, we're trying to set up a space for regulars to hang and chat while also tuning in. We aren't abandoning mixlr or the mixlr chat, but this discord channel gives us a chance to keep the pace of conversation manageable for the people who've joined and gotten used to our quiet corner of the web while we can still provide a landing pad for newcomers to FAM land.

So if you find the summer months have turned the chat into a chaotic mess, give the link below a try:

Note: These links are only active for 24 hours, we're still trying to figure out how to vet people without being exclusionary, it's gonna be a balance I'm sure we don't nail right out of the gate, but we're airing on the side of controlling to start. If the invite's expired, shoot an email to the address below, and we'll get you set up.

Intrinsic Fun but Meaningful

Psychedelics are intrinsically fun.

that is is its just fun to be high on them.

but it's interesting how they always stimulate the bran to new thoughts

      crazy thoughts

      thoughts you can't recall

      great thoughts

I've always wondered about the efficacy of those thoughts that were recallled.

      did they make a difference

If those thoughts are ever applied

Joy Daily Companion

  are you surrounded by love

      encased in love

      bursting with love

      or at least joy

      is joy your daily companion

Pretending my thoughts matter

Me:    hey Fam chatter

Fam Chatter :

      Hi

Me:
      how are you

Are you feeling deep and contemplative or just craving a phish fix

oh she left

      ran like the wind

I got too personal with my question

not everyone wants to to be fam

they just want to consume a service

and there's nothing wrong with that it's a choice

I'm glad I didnt make that choice

it's funny because when it was just the early mixlr crew I was really paranoid

I had never really focused on the .net ethos that people meet each other.

I had always treate the internet as it's own thing. What happened there stayed there.

Never belived that it could actually have the real world effect of making friendships.

So it scared me a little at first. People wanted to exchange cell phone numbers and plan meetings

And how really good to each other everyone was.

I started opening up to them.

      I trusted them enough.

      and I didn't get burned

So I did finally meet some real life mixlr crew... I guess we were fammers too by then.

I got very sick and they helped me.

such genrosity and kndness floored me.

I'n my life. only family and strangers have helped me at times I needed it.

So this group of people I'd just met doing so much was amazing.

It gave me a little hope.

And they seemed to like both personalities.

      I'm tremendously shy in preson.

but online I can be kind of a nut job.

Interestingly both personalities are not interesting to most people.

so It's not like I invetnted a way to be online that would make me more desireable

acceptances by big groups is not my destiny.

It hurts. I wish I were the type that reached more people.

but that would not be me

and who knows what I would lose in the process.

The trick it seems if you are a freak in life is to find your own way and survive.

Survive has been my mantra for many tough times.

it's almost the categorical imperative in darwin.

And from a spiritual perspective I'm here to do or be something.

I'm a little scared of dying because I've done some bad things

but mostly I am excited about dying when the time is right

my body will reject me like all the friends I never got to know in high school

I watched my mother die very slowly to cancer. And from that I got confirmation that       you are not your body really

      something about us is eternal

I think believing that is very helpful.

we're not even just our brain. our spirit has emergent properties

If you can really dig this kind of music (unusual playlist for wfam) it takes you        places like a long phish jam. And that journey can clarify things too.

Well I have expressed many things

      some of them quite vulnerable

but I want to live an open life

I can handle any trolls fucking with me

I expect no one will really read it

      and that's okay

so I guess this show was just an exercise for me to write a little essay about me.

      that's a waste of resources

Amswered Questions

after a second it's gone
a second second brings a chance for redemption
but then it's feathers in the dawn

alice laid her hand down on the pillow
I looked from a distance for a very long time

the whole web of lines could say more
but since there would be specific questions
I bent and looked closely
troubled childbirth
long life out living many lovers
too much strife
not enough laughter

but I can't tell her that so bluntly
so I take out a smoke and skip away
"Jam On Sister Girl"

Baked Fish

Jeff was baking a fish thunder crashed and a boat slid into the kitchen thru the window linda was gasping for air and stood up with a firarm taking out the sopha

Spooky

I had to sneak outside quick and somehow turning on music made it feel less spooky.

Missed Connections

I was hoping I might find you in the mixlr room to chat it up a bit, but alas you weren't there.

By Now

Haha I thought by now you’d know that I wouldn’t find keeping touch creepy!

Waste

All I know is I whispered the lyrics of Waste into my moms ears while it was going on as I wanted her to know what the lyrics were

Job of Jobs

so now I guess I'm learning how to replace parts of a laptop assembly as opposed to buying a new machine outright

I wish there were still places for artisans

I like tackling problems I have no idea how to solve when first approached

what I'm trying to get at, is I wish there was a way to get people coming to me asking to fix their PC hardware, without having to specifically own an electronics repair shop

repeat for cooking, stone facing, creative writing, etc

I want a job of jobs

make sense?

So much love

Just too much love means

making up things to break your heart

Holding out

Even holding out for a long time feels good.

Holding out?

Yeah like clasping your hands outstretched above your head.

Catch of the Week Vol. 4: June 1995

Summer 1995 could very well be my (easo91) absolute favorite tour in all of Phish's 35 years of touring. Every night seems to have ...
